Audience Effects Theory

 1) Write a definition of a passive audience: 

Passive audience is An audience that is exposed to media/marketing material but doesn't actively engage with the content or messaging.

2) Write a definition of an active audience: 

Active audience is an  audience is engaging, interpreting, and responding to media messages and are able to question the message.

3) Write a definition of the hypodermic needle theory: 

Hypodermic needle theory is when the originator of a message is able to impact its audience by directly injecting it with a message.

4) Write down a media product (e.g. TV show, newspaper or videogame) for each category of Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory and WHY it fits that particular audience use/gratification. The first one is done for you: 

INFORMATION/SURVEILLANCE: The Times newspaper
 > Why: It tells audiences important information about politics, the world and more.
PERSONAL IDENTITY:
 > Why 
It tells the audience a celebrity who is inspiring others and they want to be like them  
DIVERSION/ENTERTAINMENT: 
 > Why: 
That u might find something interesting and that you wouldn't do in your normal life
RELATIONSHIPS:
 > Why
They are informing the public about famous couples relationships. So if that when you have respect for someone and they do a great thing so u start to build care/love for that person.


5) Re-watch the clip from Blue Planet above and write a paragraph analysing how elements of the clip offer the audience pleasures or gratifications (use media terminology from Uses and Gratifications theory and the 3 Vs - notes outlined above).

The clip from the Blue planet Vicorious and Voyeuristic pleasure as it has a lot of hidden cameras and you are experiencing this through the diver’s point of view.
